Maryland’s ties to the racing industry extend back to colonial times and still remain strong. Pimlico is home to one of the most prestigious races in the world: the Preakness. Officially opened in 1870, Pimlico racecourse is approaching its 150th anniversary. With many of the world’s most famous thoroughbreds having raced there, its history is a virtual “Who’s Who” of the racing world. As part of “The Triple Crown” racing tradition. Pimlico is an important piece of the past as well as the current racing world. For several years, the future of the racecourse and its hosting of the Preakness was in doubt. However, in October 2019, an agreement in principle was struck between the Stronach Group, the City of Baltimore, and groups representing Maryland horsemen, to keep the Preakness permanently at Pimlico and to engage in a major renovation of the track and facilities. Once approved by the Maryland legislature, the race- course will be positioned to carry on as a jewel in Baltimore’s crown far into the future.
