On Veterans’ Day, BNHA and Partners Debut “In Freedom’s Name: Honoring Maryland’s Black Defenders of Liberty” on YouTube

Updated Film Features Message From MD’s National Guard Major General Janeen L. Birckhead

Baltimore, MD (November 11, 2023) — In commemoration of Veterans Day, the Maryland Military Historical Society (MDMHS) African American Military History Project, in collaboration with the Baltimore National Heritage Area (BNHA), the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, and Stevenson University, is proud to announce that the 34-minute film "In Freedom’s Name: Honoring Maryland’s Black Defenders of Liberty," which pays tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of Maryland's Black men and women in defense of liberty is now available on YouTube.

This updated video features a special 2023 Veterans Day message and introduction by Major General Janeen L. Birckhead, the 31st Adjutant General of Maryland's National Guard.

On this Veterans Day, we remember the courage and dedication of all those who have protected and continue to protect freedom and liberty. Complemented by a 43-panel exhibition of the same name still on display in Annapolis, the film’s accessibility on YouTube allows viewers worldwide to join in honoring the heroes of our past and present.

This compelling film initially premiered on Defenders Day in September—coinciding with the 209th anniversary of the Defense of Baltimore. In this historical event, Black and white residents defended the United States against British control. This significant victory reminds us of the strength and unity safeguarding our nation's values.

Honor those who protect freedom and celebrate the enduring legacy of our heroes on Veterans Day by viewing In Freedom’s Name: Honoring Maryland’s Black Defenders of Liberty” on YouTube.
