City College Marching Knights, Singing Sensations Choir To Join in Celebration of Baltimore’s Defenders
WHAT: Baltimore National Heritage Area (BNHA) will celebrate Baltimore’s oldest holiday, Defenders’ Day, in partnership with the National Park Service, on its 208th anniversary since 1815—one year following the Battle of Baltimore. Commemorating Baltimore's victorious defense against the British Army during the War of 1812, local youth will join The Fort McHenry Guard Fife & Drum Corps in celebrating Baltimore’s diverse group of defenders, soldiers, sailors, and civilians with performances.
In September 1814, defenders successfully guarded the British at sea (Fort McHenry) and on land (North Point), inspiring Francis Scott Key to what is known today as the national anthem—The Star Spangled Banner.
