BNHA, Elected Officials to Unveil Historical Marker, Launching Countdown to ADT’s 150th Anniversary

August 14, 2023

In honor of ADT’s 149th anniversary, the Baltimore National Heritage Areas (BNHA) will dedicate

a bronze plaque affixed to the American Building in downtown Baltimore, the site where the company

was founded in 1874.

American District Telegraph, or ADT, was incorporated on August 14, 1874 in Baltimore City as a

telegraph delivery business. Thirty years later when telephones replaced telegraphs, the company

pivoted to guard service with ADT Watchmen patrolling commercial and government facilities.

Through the decades, ADT innovated new technology to protect and connect customers, eventually

providing residential security in the 1980s.
